PROJECT

Cable-Railing Deck With a Natural Stone Landing

A honey-toned deck on a sage-green home, with black cable railing, lattice skirting and wide cascading steps down to a natural stone landing.

Photographed in the rain, which is the least flattering light a deck ever gets and the most honest — wet boards show every seam and every fastener. The deck sits low against a sage-green house with arched windows, and the octagonal front edge follows the shape of the room behind it rather than cutting straight across.

The steps are wide and cascading rather than a narrow flight, and they land on natural stone instead of finishing at grade. Lattice skirting closes the space underneath. The railing is black cable, which against a pale green house keeps the deck from reading as a heavy addition.
